Alba Iulia is one of the six-county capitals in Romania, whose resident population registered an increase in the year 2008. In 2019 the population of Alba Iulia is 74 000 inhabitants. In the same situation are only the municipalities of Iasi, Vaslui, Bistrita, Sibiu, and Cluj-Napoca - according to a study realized by the Center for Urban and Territorial Development.
The gender distribution of the population in Alba Iulia is unequal (35,312 males and 38,971 females, resulting in a male index of about 0.9 (906 men per 1,000 women). This "imbalance" is the consequence of the difference of almost seven years between the average life expectancy of women and the level of this indicator among men.
Although it is the residence of a fast-growing demographic agglomeration, Alba Iulia has a relatively good situation in terms of the age structure of the population. According to the 2011 census, the population aged over 65 had a share of about 11% at the municipal level. In 2016, the situation was similar, namely 11.96% (8 881 people over 65), amid the rising population of the city. Alba Iulia has the lowest number of elderly people, relative to the total population. In 2016, the population of Alba Iulia between the ages of 0-14 was 10 421 people (14.03%).
The average life expectancy at Alba County has increased by about 4 years over the past two decades, from 70.36 years in 1990 to 74.23 years in 2011 (70.67 years for men and 78.01 years for women ), and in 2016 the average life span reached 76.08 years in the whole county (76.79 years at the urban level, 73.66 years for men, 79.9 for women). The age segment aged 15-64 was 54 981 people in Alba Iulia last year, i.e. 74.02%, slightly decreasing compared to 2011, as a result of the aging population.
